Welcome to the Beginner's Guide to Planetary Annihilation. If you're new to the game, or even new to RTS games, this a step by step guide to getting a first taste of the game.
Game Modes[edit]
There are three basic game modes - Galatic War - a single player campaign, AI Skirmish, and Multiplayer. The easiest way to learn the game is to start with AI Skirmish which is similar to multiplayer matches, except the player is battling AI rather than real players.
AI Skirmish[edit]
To start an AI Skirmish, select 'Single Player' from the menu, then select AI Skirmish. Under slot 2, select 'Add AI' then wait for the 'Start Game' button to become active at the bottom of the screen once the game is done 'Building Planets'.
Next it's time to select a spawning location. Zoom in (mouse wheel) on the planet with the '1' and '2' on it, and choose which location to spawn in. Pick the one with the most green dots nearby and mouse click in it, then wait for your commander to land there.
Commanders - Commanders are the player's 'king pieces' per say - the goal is to eliminate the other player's commander. Do this and the game is won. If your commander is defeated, the game is lost.
The commander is powerful and can build quickly, so make use of him throughout the game, but be sure not to send him too far from other defenses, lest he get attacked and overwhelmed.
Resources - Once the commander is in place, it's time to use him to start building. The game's economy runs on two main resources - Energy and Metal, which are represented by the bars on the top of the screen (metal on the left, energy on the right). Both items are necessary to build up an army, and having too little of either will slow a player down considerably. If both bars are full and efficiency is high (the percentage in the center between the bars), then there's nothing to worry about, but if they are low, then Energy Plants and/or Metal Extractors need to be built.
If a player is currently producing more energy or metal than they can use, they will hear a message that more storage is needed. Ignoring this message won't slow the player down, but building Energy Storage or Metal Storage units will keep the excess from going to waste and make it available to the player for increased production.
Building - The first step should probably be to build a Bot Factory or a Vehicle Factory. Select the Commander (click on him, or ALT C) to bring up a menu of the things he can build. Factories are on the left side. Choose one of the factories then choose where to place it (if it shows white, it can be placed, if it shows red, it needs to go elsewhere), then watch him build it. Once the factory is built, set the Commander to another task - have him build an Energy Plant (on the right side of the build menu), or Metal Exatractors. Metal Extractors can only be placed on the green dots on the planet. Choose the nearest one.
Building Multiple Items with the Commander or Fabricators: To set the Commander or a Fabrication unit or units to automatically building multiple items, select the item to build, then hold the left mouse button and drag. If it's metal extractors, it will create a circle and the commander or fabricators will place them on any green dots within the circle. If it is other items, it will show multiples of them evenly spaced as far as the mouse drags.
Next select the factory to bring up the menu of items that it can build. Each factory can build at least one type of Fabrication Unit - these are units that can be used to build other units; so a vehicle, bot, plane, or ship that can be used to build more factories, turrets, metal extractors, etc..Select the fabrication unit and click it repeatedly to set the factory to building a handful of them.
As the fabrication units become available, select them and set them to building more items. Metal Extractors and energy plants should be a priority, and probably at least one more factory at this point.
When zoomed out, fabricators will be represented by a '+' sign. Multiple fabricators can be selected at once, and will work together to build units. The more fabricators working on one unit, the faster it will be built. Press 'F' to select all idle fabricators.
Defenses[edit]
Once there are a few factories going, and enough energy plants and metal extractors to support them, make sure to build some defenses around the perimeter, using the items in the 'combat' section of the Commander and Fabrication Units' build menus. Each type of item will defend against different types of attacks - land, air, or naval - so make sure to have a variety to cover the bases (only worry about naval attacks if there is water nearby).
Offensive Units[edit]
Now begin using the factories to build up troops. In addition to attacking the enemy's structures and Commander, the player's troops will need to be able to defend against land, air, and possibly sea attacks, so pay attention to what each type of combat unit does, and make sure all bases are covered with a variety of unit types.
Factories can be set to build continuously by choosing an item (or items) to build, then clicking on the arrow on the right hand side toolbar, near the bottom, and selecting the loop. All factories can be selected by pressing 'Shift F1' or just idle factories by pressing 'Shift F2'. These will bring up multiple build menus at once for quick selections.
Finding the Enemy[edit]
The key to winning the game is finding and destroying the enemy commander. There are air and land vehicles such as the Firefly (air) and the Skitter (land) that can be used to scout for enemies, and radar units can also be set up to detect approaching enemies. Troops can also be sent out to find and destroy enemies and enemy structures.
Once enemy structures, units, or the Commander have been located, send troops out to attack. Destroying the enemy's Energy Plants, Metal Extractors, and Factories will slow them down and make it harder for them to produce troops, so don't hesitate to go after them.

Planetary Annihilation is a real-time strategyPC game originally developed by Uber Entertainment, whose staff included several industry veterans who worked on Total Annihilation and Supreme Commander. A standalone expansion pack for Planetary Annihilation has been released which adds powerful Titan-class units, called Planetary Annihilation: TITANS.
Planetary Annihilation and Planetary Annihilation: TITANS are now developed and published by a new company Planetary Annihilation Inc.[8]
Gameplay[edit]
In interviews with PC Gamer and Joystiq, lead game developer Jon Mavor commented that the game's complexity and playtime can vary, from half-hour, 2-player battles to lengthy matches with potentially 40-players. However, at release 40-player matches were not yet available.[9][10]Planetary Annihilation features a planet-based map system with different types of planets and asteroid like moons. Players will be able to conquer other planets and even entire systems on maps said to include 'hundreds of worlds', through the Galactic War. These planets are dynamic in that they can be 'annihilated' using other planets or catalysts, a major focus for Uber Entertainment. The game's creators stated that Planetary Annihilation will resemble something of the 1997 real-time strategy Total Annihilation as its focus is more towards 'macro' gameplay as opposed to 'micro' gameplay. In development updates, Mavor has commented that 'a million' in-game units is a design goal of the development team.[11] The player(s) lose when their last commander is destroyed.
Development[edit]
Jon Mavor wrote the graphics engine for Total Annihilation. He was also the lead programmer on Supreme Commander. The game's art style was designed by Steve Thompson, who previously worked on the art for Total Annihilation and Supreme Commander. Voice actor John Patrick Lowrie, who did all the narrations for Total Annihilation, did the narrations for Planetary Annihilation as well.[6]
According to Mavor, while game visualization began in May 2012, three months prior to the game's public announcement, the game concept itself had been in development for approximately three years by that time. Additionally, the server and game engine technologies that would underpin the game had been in development for several years prior to the game's public reveal, with some of the server technology having already made its way into PlayFab, Uber Entertainment's back-end server network.[12]
Kickstarter funding[edit]
Rather than pursue investor funding, Planetary Annihilation's developer Uber Entertainment chose to use the crowdfunding site Kickstarter for their financial backing. They revealed the game to the public on August 15, 2012, with their Kickstarter funding goal set at $900,000.[6] The concept video used for the pledge campaign took approximately three months to go from initial pencil-and-paper designs to final animation.[13]
As the campaign began, pledges came in quickly, reaching $450,000 by the fifth day of the campaign. On August 22, Uber Entertainment announced the first set of 'stretch goals' for the Kickstarter campaign, that is, additional features for the game that would be included or 'unlocked' by exceeding the funding goal. As the campaign progressed, additional goals were revealed, with the goals eventually including naval units and water planets at $1.1 million, gas giants and orbiting platforms at $1.3 million, lava and metal planets at $1.5 million, a 'Galactic War' feature at $1.8 million, a full orchestral score at $2 million, and a behind-the-scenes documentary if the pledges should surpass $2.1 million.[6][14]
By the fifteenth day of the Kickstarter campaign, Planetary Annihilation reached its funding goal of $900,000, and by the campaign's conclusion on September 14, 2012, Planetary Annihilation had raised approximately $2,228,000 via Kickstarter and an additional $101,000 via PayPal. As a result, all stretch goals were achieved.
Kickstarter featured Planetary Annihilation as the 11th Kickstarter project to have raised over a million dollars, using it to highlight the successes that games had been enjoying on the site.[15]

Release[edit]
The Alpha was launched on June 8, 2013[16] for alpha-level backers, with Steam Early Access since the 13th of June, 2013.[17]
The Beta version of the game was released on September 26, 2013,[18] and it was later opened up to all initial Kickstarter backers on November 19, 2013.[19] On December 6, 2013, the final release date was postponed, with the game expected 'to be feature-complete in early 2014'.[20]
Planetary Annihilation launched on September 5, 2014 on Windows, Mac and Linux.[21]
Planetary Annihilation: TITANS, an updated version of the game was released on August 18, 2015. It adds 21 units to the game, including five titan class units. It also adds multi-level terrain, a bounty mode, and an improved tutorial for the single-player.[22]
Planetary Annihilation: TITANS was gifted free to original Kickstarter backers from 2012[23] with a 66% off upgrade discount for other owners.[24]
A permanent 90% off discount for the upgrade to Planetary Annihilation: TITANS was announced by Planetary Annihilation Inc on August 17, 2018.[8]
Classic Planetary Annihilation was removed from sale on September 5, 2018 and continues to receive updates for existing owners.[25].
Critical reception[edit]
Planetary Annihilation received a mixed reception upon release. The game was praised for its ambitious concept, but criticized for playability and overall incompleteness. Rock, Paper, Shotgun's Brendan Caldwell writes, 'Planetary Annihilation is a slick, modernised RTS, engineered from the ground up to appeal to the fast-paced, competitive, hotkey-loving esports crowd.'[29]PC Gamer's Emanuel Maiberg, experiencing hard to learn gameplay unaided by proper tutorials and disrupted by technical issues, states 'I know there's a great, massive RTS beneath all these issues. I've seen glimpses of it when everything works correctly, but at the moment I can't recommend Planetary Annihilation without a warning that it's bound to disappoint and frustrate, even if you do teach yourself to play it.'[30]IGN's Rob Zacny summarizes, 'A cool idea about robot armies battling across an entire solar system breaks apart when the realities of controlling multiple worlds at the same time set in.'[28]

Update 17/10/18: This patch is now live for everyone.
![]()
The newly formed studio, Planetary Annihilation Inc, has pushed out their first upgrade for the strategy game Planetary Annihilation: TITANS.
For those not clued up, Planetary Annihilation: TITANS is now being run by a dedicated studio that are going to give it a new life with continued support and plenty of updates. The original Planetary Annihilation is no longer available to buy, with a permanent discount to upgrade to TITANS.
This new 'PTE' (public test environment) build is available to opt-in on Steam with no password required. Their aim is to focus on 'speed and stability' before upgrading the main tech behind the game. With that in mind they've fixed some server-side crash issues, adjusted some balance issues along with some interesting AI changes. The AI, for example, will look to engage in more fights it thinks it can win as well as being better at gathering and using intel.
There's plenty more multi-threading for servers, improved crash reporting for all platforms, a number of adjustments to improve performance and so on. Overall, it might not sound like a big deal, but it's a good step forward. You can see the full changes here.

I've given the beta version a test for a few hours and it does seem to work fine. Really happy to see the game continue to live on, as it really is quite good. I actually forgot just how much I enjoy this game, watching hundreds on units travel across a world destroying everything in their path.
You can pick up Planetary Annihilation: TITANS on Humble Store and Steam.
